e (prefix)
Something electronic, usually replacing a paper-based or verbal process (i.e., e-mail or e-help). Most recently, United Airlines expanded this usage with its "e-ticket" service.

e-mail
Electronic mail, as opposed to the paper mail known in Net parlance as "snail mail."

e-mail address
A unique place, represented by a string of letters and numbers, where a computer user can receive e-mail. Also referred to as an e-dress

e-moticon
Also known as a smiley. Used to convey emotion in chat, e-mail or some other textual document. For example (to be read sideways): :-)

editorial
News, analysis, and feature articles in a publication; also, slang for the writing, editing, and art staff.

EDP
Electronic Data Processing

effort
Each part of a series of promotions to the same. Especially any promotion to subscribers, such as renewal letters, bills or a piece of direct mail. Each effort in a series of efforts is identified by a number-first effort, second effort, etc.

electronic data interchange
A way unaffiliated companies can use networks to link their businesses. While electronic mail between companies is common, electronic data interchange passes bigger bundles that replace large paper documents such as bills and contracts. Besides saving paper, computers could save time by taking over transactions like regular purchase orders that now require human intervention.

email
Electronic mail, as opposed to the paper mail known in Net parlance as "snail mail."

emoticon
A text illustration of a facial expression that indicates sarcasm or other tone - best understood if viewed sideways. Most common are :-) and :-(.

emulsion
The side of a sheet of film or papersensitive to light.

enamel
Finish on a sheet of paper that shows a highly glossy surface. An enameled sheet has better printing characteristics and is more expensive than a simple coated sheet. The paper is usually manufactured free of ground wood pulp, which adds to the expense.

encryption
A way to impose data security on selected files, folders, or disks. Encryption disguises data. Often the encrypted item is protected with a password so that only those knowing the password can access (decrypt and use) the data.

ethernet
The most common sort of network used in corporations. Its top speed is 10 million bits a second, theoretically enough to deliver two copies of "Moby Dick" every second. Because it works like a party line, if too many people try to send messages at once, the network slows dramatically. (See Token Ring)

exceptions List
Group of normally suspicious conditions that you have told SAM not to look for in a particular file. Exceptions are saved when you click the Remember button in a suspicious activity alert.

exchange
To barter, trade or exchange goods or services for other goods or services without the use of money, i.e., free advertising space bartered for booth space at a trade show, or free advertising space bartered for free personal computers. (See Barter, Trade Out)

executable file

A file containing program code that can be launched. Generally includes any file that is an application extension, or a system file.

expiration
The end of any contract, especially of a subscription.

extension
1) Approval given to agencies and clients which allows them to submit materials/film for ads after the published deadline.
2) Prolonging a subscription period. 3) Prolonging an advertising contract period.

Book Notes

Selling the Invisible;
A Field Guide to Modern Marketing by Harry Beckwith

This little book will help you sell advertising more than any other currently on the market.  Advertisers don’t want to own the spots, or the banners or the pages we might sell them.  They want to own the results of the advertising expenditure.  And because the results are sometimes not immediate, sometimes not close-enough to the point of sale, or often obscured by other business factors, they are frequently invisible. continue
