G&A
General and Administrative cost or expenses necessary to operate a business. Examples would be rent depreciation, supplies, repair, legal expenses, computer services, insurance, etc.
galley
The "first proof" of typesetting as it comes off the typesetting machine. The format is a long narrow strip. In the fully digital age galleys are no longer used.
gang
To group several items for printing, photography, or color separation, etc.
gatefold
A multi-page ad with pages that fold out from the spine of the issue.
gateway
How to get in. One of the most common usages for the term is an on-line service company that gives customers access to the Internet. Inside a company, the term usually refers to specialized hardware that connects two different types of systems, such as a mainframe to a local-area network.
GIF
Graphics Interchange Format: A common file format for pictures first popularized by CompuServe, pronounced with a hard g like skiff.
gigabit network
What Al Gore wants us to have. A gigabit network means one that operates at a billion bits a second - 100 times Ethernet's speed, and fast enough to make a digitized movie file look as good as in the theater.
gigabyte
1,000 megabytes, or a billion bytes, or, more exactly, 1,073,741,824 bytes (see kilobyte).
Gopher
Menu-based guide to directories on the Internet, usually organized by subject.
Gopher+
Enhanced version of Gopher. Includes support for multimedia, etc.
grace period
A specified extension of time beyond the due date for payment of a debt.
grain
In paper, the general orientation of the tiny paper fibers from which the sheet is made. If a sheet is folded against the grain, it means that many fibers are broken during the folding process, giving a ragged and weak fold.
graphical user interface
Also known as a GUI or gooey; the interface design for a particular web site or computer program that allows a user to figure out how to get things done or find what he or she wants with out reading text.
gross
The total cost of an advertisement or service prior to any applicable deductions or discounts. Most often used in the discussion of advertising media pricing. In that case it would refer to the 'billed' revenue before agency discounts.
groupware
Programs that enable many people on a computer network to work simultaneously on the same file, while viewing the changes made by others as they occur.
GUI
(Pronounced "gooey") "Graphical user interface" with windows and point-and-click capability, as opposed to a command-line interface with typed instructions. Windows/DOS
gutter
The portion of a page nearest the fold.
gutter bleed
Printing and/or color that runs off the page toward the binding. Elimination of white border. |
