UHF
Ultra high frequency, the range used by TV channels 14 through 69.
uncoated
Paper that has a slightly rough, unshiny finish upon which no coatings were applied after manufacture.
under mouse arrest
Getting busted for vilolating an online service's rules of conduct.
unique users
The number of different users who access a Web site or page during a given period. To measure this, Web sites often employ a user registration system.
UNIX
An operating system developed by Bell Laboratories that supports multi-user and multitasking operations. It is also the most common operating system on the Internet. No, not DOS or Windows. Not yet.
unkown virus
A virus for which SAM does not contain a virus definiton. See also virus definition.
update
To bring information or data current or up to date.
uploading
Since personal computers are separate from the mainframe, there is a possibility a user would want to transfer data from the PC disk to the mainframe or server.
UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply)
A backup unit that provides continuous electrical power when the normal power supply is interrupted.
URL "Universal/Uniform resource locator."
The World Wide Web address of a resource on the Internet.
Univerisal Serial Bus (USB)
A port of most computers now that allows users to connect multiple devices (such as printers or scanners) to the same port. USB ports also transmit data faster than a serial port.
USENET (User Network)
A worldwide network of newsgroups on thousands of subjects.
user groups
Groups of people who have banded together with a common interest to share information on such things as hard-to-find hard-ware platforms (Franklin, Timex Sinclair, Osborn, etc) or a particular software (FORTRAN, COBOL, C++, etc).

UUCP (Unix-to-Unix copy Program)
Unix software for copying files between two Unix machines, that has become a networking protocol. |
