V.32
The international standard for 9600-bps and 4800-bps modem operation. V.32 modems fall back to 4800-bps when line quality is impaired.

V.42
A data compression standard used by some modems.

VDT

velox
A black and white photo print.

VERONICA (Very Easy Rodent-Oriented Net-wide Index to Computerized Archives)
A program used to find information on Gopher servers.

VGA (Video Graphis Array)
The 8-bit graphics standards for video output on PCs, which feature 640x480 resolution and 256 colors.

VHF
Very high frequency, the range used by TV channels 2 through 13.

video dial tone (vdt)
Video on demand, the provision of services by telephone companies.

video server
A video server is a decked out computer that it specifically designed to supply users with video. They usually come with huge disk drives and ungodly amounts of memory as well as the ability to transmit large amounts of data in a short period of time.

videoconference
Videoconferencing enables people in separate locations to meet using live video pictures and sound.

viral marketing
Any advertising that propagates it self. When Hotmail users send e-mail, they unwittingly infect the recipient with the tagline at the bottom of the message.

virtual or virtual reality (VR)
A computer generated world that surrounds one’s senses, usually using some sort of headgear and hand-held control device.

virtual VCR
Virtual VCR is expected to come with video-on demand. With VVCR the delivery system mimics all the functions of a VCR for the user. A set-top box will allow the viewer to pause, rewind or fast-forward the movie or program ordered through the cable or local delivery system.

virus A self-replicating program written intentionally to alter the way your computer operates without your permission or knowledge. A virus attaches copies of itself to other files, and when activated, may damage files, cause erratic system bahavior, or merely display annoying messages.

virus definiton Virus information that allows SAM to recognize and alert you to the presence of a specific virus. See also Sam user Definitions file and SAM Virus Definitions file.

visitor An individual who interacts with a web site. Several methods are being used to identify visitors.

visits
A series of page requests by a visitor on a given site within a specified period, usually 30 minutes. Visits usually break down into the number of pages requested per visit per unique user. That way you know who visits your site, how often they come and how long they stay.

VOD (video on-demand), NVOD, TVOD, etc.
It means video programs when we want them. You don’t have to trudge out in the snow and find out that the tape you want is not in. You don’t have to spend your vacation thinking about the meter running on the three tapes you forgot to return. NVOD is Near VOD and often means that the cable system has enough channels to give you some ability to pick the time you watch. TVOD is True VOD and just a way of distinguishing it from NVOD.
